Don't wait to read this book! While some reviewers indicate that Tolkien is too detailed, I found the rich detail to add to the experience of reading this classic. While reading I placed my bookmark on the map pages at the back of the edition I have so that I could quickly refer to the maps and orient myself during the journey. The movies were very good but left out too many characters and adventures!
There's probably not much left unsaid about this book, so a short review / reason for the one dropped star: a sustained descriptive story like an old heroic poem - like a prose version of the many songs that feature in the book itself. But in terms of drama ... I didn't feel the danger and urgency of the various adventures, most of the time. It was there in the Fellowship of the Ring but by Return of the King it felt very descriptive just listing all the goings on.
Also, only four women with speaking parts? Rose Cotton, Galadriel, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, Eowyn. I can't recall that Arwen ever actually speaks. I know, it was 1955. Eowyn's struggle to be a part of the war read like someone had questioned Tolkein on the lack of women in Middle Earth so he added her in afterwards (ok, you happy now?).
Glad I read it, might read it again one day. Loved the Ents.

no ❤️ dnf yall sorry but i have so little buy-in like nobody's flirting. nobody's hot. there's no women except like the mention of one here and there. even the characters don't really have friendships with each other they just exist together in the same place. literally just little guys in a grassy glen going on a trek to throw a ring in a volcano like why is it 1031 pages long
