A masterclass in worldbuilding, with loveable characters that have really stood the test of time. If he didn't go on-and-on describing the countryside, this would easily be 5 stars.

I can't escape it, it's the fate of every world-builder who reads this book to realize that, at last, someone else understands their inner landscape. Someone else has felt the awe and terror of the outdoors, someone else has met the magical and truly known creatures of dreams and longing, someone else has done all we long to do. And each of us build on what he has created, humbly and with all the passion we possess. Thank you, Master Tolkien. We will continue the attempt to teach as we were taught.
