Nora Robert Midnight Bayou is a paranormal romance. Declan is a normal rich boy from Boston. He just cancelled his engagement to the girl of his parents dreams and bought an old plantation near New Orleans. There he is greeted by his friend, Remy, the ghost staying in his home, and a beautiful girl, Angelina. What is a man to do when he is being tormented by both ghosts and a girl who he is falling for...hard?

I think this just displaced Montana Sky in my pantheon of favorite NR books. Declan is an undeniable dreamboat and I love the house porn.

Thoughts 💭
Unfortunately, I went into this novel blind so to speak. None of the reviews I skimmed had any mention of the events of Chapter 1. If you are someone that is not able to handle detailed Sexual Assault in novels, please do NOT read Chapter 1 or when the events start to take shape in the direction of SA skip to the end of the chapter. It's very easy for someone to get the gist of what happens without having to read the details.

I don't think my mind and body will come back from reading the detailed assault in Chapter 1 to try and complete the book. So please be warned, do more research than I did.

long before I had heard about Nora Roberts I had come across two movies of hers Midnight Bayou and Carolina Moon. I instantly fell in love with the movies not knowing that Nora was an author (I was a young teenager at the time, My school library did not have her work). A few years later I found out that the movies that had become favorites were actually books. Me being a book nerd was ecstatic. I love this book. I love the characters and Nora's writing style. I have the hardback edition which makes this book look like a large one. It was so good that I finished it one night. I could not put it down!!

Southern. Mystery. Dysfunctional family. Haunted house. Romance. He falls first. Multiple timelines.

If any of these words pop out to you, then be sure to give this book a look into.

Although I found the end a little underwhelming, the journey of the book itself was great! Roberts has beautiful writing and has such a way with making you feel like you are in the book.

I enjoyed how we see both a toxic and dysfunctional family but then we also see a loving and supportive family.

I loved Declan so much and hes not the normal book boyfriend I'd enjoy but the love he had for the house and Lena were *chefs kiss*

I always love Ms Roberts' standalones, her storytelling is effortless. This one was no exception. The romance was lovely, the main characters likeable and honest, and the haunted house scared me when I was reading this at bedtime.

I tend to be a Nora Roberts fan to begin with. No, she's not deep and mysterious and full of symbolism. But if you want a good love story and a quick read with some substance, she's a go-to. And with Midnight Bayou, girl did not disappoint!

I listened to this book on CD which is rare for me but I'm so happy I did. The narrators had great accents and it really made this book come alive for me. There is no chance I would have been able to imagine a good Cajun accent in my head and actually hearing the voices (not Declan style ;)) speak like the characters transported me to the Bayou as well as the early 1900's.

Rather than a specific character, this story focuses on Manet Hall. I love old plantation houses and love hearing the stories behind them so this book was right up my alley. I really enjoyed the flashbacks to the beginning of the century and the seamless way two love stories were told. At times, it got a little out there with ghosts and re-incarnation stuff but I really enjoyed the overall story line.

You know I'm going to assess the characters and I obviously have to begin with Dec. Nora is known for her leading men and she completely understands what makes women tick when it comes to a main character in novels. Declan was right on par! He was strong, stubborn, rich, and in love. Haha, it sounds ridiculous but he is a guy who any girl could easily fall for. Angelina did not see him coming but even her strong-willed, no nonsense self couldn't deny him. The love story is sweet and believable. The characters are well developed and charming; who wouldn't fall instantly in love with Miss Odette? And the slight ghost story to the plot just adds to it. I would definitely recommend this for a fun read! (and listen to it on "tape" if possible. Did I just age myself or what?!?)

3/10 sooooo spooky at the beginning I actually got goosebumps. Ended up skipping all the present crapola and read the ghost parts.
