Ghosts and reincarnation mixed into a romance. Felt the stuff with Lillibeth was left a bit unfinished.

Roberts writes a very good prickly cactus woman and agreeable solid man duo. Love the HGTV moments.

Read for Wendy the Super Librarian's July '22 TBR Challenge. Topic: Vintage.
B grade overall
Narration by James Daniels with a few chapters by Sandra Burr.

The Vintage tag for July's TBR Challenge left a nice bit of wiggle room when choosing a book. Vintage as in when the book was published? Vintage as in the style of the writing? Or perhaps vintage as in a description of an author's style, as in "That's classic Georgette Heyer!" After looking through my TBR list, I decided on the last definition and went with a vintage Nora Robert's book. The thing is, I thought I'd already read this book years ago, but realized I had seen a made-for-TV movie. I'd never actually read the book. I bought the book on audio at some point so I decided this was a great time to finally pick it up and listen.

The story really is vintage Roberts. There are two parallel storylines going on, on in the early 1900's and one in present day. There is a paranormal twist complete with ghosts. In present day a young man, Declan, has felt the pull to buy a crumbling old mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans. When he moves in to starts renovations, he is swept up into hyper-realistic dreams that he begins to feel are more like memories. he decides to find out the history of the house and learn why it's full of restless spirits. Angelina own a bar in town and her grandmother lives in the bayou next to the old Mansion. Declan falls for Lina at first sight, but she is much more wary. They get to know each other and Lina helps Declan figure out the history of the house and what's going on in the present.

The reader is told early on the tragic backstory of the house and it's occupants, but Declan and Lina learn it slowly while getting to know and trust each other. The mystery and the romance are fairly well balanced here, although the emphasis is a little more on the story than the romance. Midnight Bayou is a fairly quick, entertaining read and it kept my interest. The narration by James Daniels was well done, with good character voices and nice emotional emphasis when needed. Sandra Burr narrates a few chapters when the author is telling the backstory. She also does a nice job.

Literally what the hell is this garbage.
Reincarnation that crosses genders? A man talking about being raped and murdered when he was a woman 100 years ago. His girlfriend is his reincarnated husband? He is pissed if at his girlfriend for not helping him 100 years ago when he was murdered and raped and she was his husband on a business trip.
This is too shitty to read. I’ll never pick up another Nora Roberts book again.
