If your pops has a soft spot for animals, Jennifer Finney Boylan’s Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs (272 pp. Celadon Books, $26.99), could be the perfect Father's Day present. “As a transgender woman who began life as a boy, it’s in the dogs that I owned pre-transition that I can now understand men, and the person I once was, a long time ago.” This book could be the next classic memoir – heartwarming and illuminating. This was one of those books that I didn't want to end. It's thoughtful and wise, funny (I found myself smiling and laughing throughout) – and sometimes heartbreaking. In general, I would call this a feel-good book, perfect for reflecting and feeling comforted during this tough time. (written: April 17, 2020)

A memoir framed by seven dogs she had throughout her life, Jenny Boylan explores her journey of gender identity and transitioning.

This was a really lovely book. Boylan is a fantastic story teller and I love her writing. I laughed out loud and cried. It's a really beautiful story, about her life, the lessons she has learned as related to the dogs she has had. I wanted a little more dogs and a little less time hopping. Great book!

Good Boy by Jennifer Finney Boylan gives me mixed feelings. I love having access to more trans-positive books and I am a big lover of dogs so I jumped right away at the chance to read this one. There are a lot of insights into what can be a difficult situation and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to read about her life but I did struggle to get through the whole book and it took me much longer than expected. It felt disjointed a lot of the time and I could not really empathize with the way she talked about her dogs and how they were supposedly related to the stages in her life. It was not until the end of the book where I really felt that connection and wish to find out more and I probably will read more of her books in the future because she does still have an interesting writing style, even if it does not always work for me personally.

I really enjoyed this story of love, understanding, and acceptance. Each dog in Jenny's life taught her something about herself or her loved ones and I thought she tied all of these things together so eloquently. I've already got plans to buy this for someone as a Christmas present! I highly recommend it.

I thought this book was so good! It was very creative of Jennifer to, basically, tell the story of her life through the digs in her life. This book is, at times; hilarious, sad, inspiring, and critical. Great book for any dog lover!
