Possibly the easiest academic article I have ever read. White is so compelling, clear, and a delight to read all at once that it is no wonder that this single article nearly single-handedly began an entire academic field (Ecotheology).
That being said, it is evident from his writing that he is a sociological historian and no historical theologian. White is compelling and competent only in his discussion of historical tool development and the progression of the philosophy of industrialism. His grasp of medieval theology is tenuous. To my knowledge, no medieval divine would be caught dead saying that nature exists only for man's exploitation. Saint Francis was not even close to being the heretical super hippy White wants him to be.
