Edition reviewed: Heart of Darkness and Other Tales (Oxford World's Classics)

Excellent edition of four of Conrad's stories, culminating in Heart of Darkness. The footnotes are detailed, insightful and extremely helpful in understanding the text. I bought this to read Heart of Darkness, but reading the three other tales was helpful in setting the more famous work in context.

«[Y]our strength is just an accident arising from the weakness of others»

«[I]t is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one's existence - that which makes its truth, its meaning - its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream - alone…»

«Droll thing life is - that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself - that comes too late - a crop of unextinguishable regrets.»

This wonderful little book combines some of Conrad's best short novels into one book that becomes his exploration of man in all of his ages. Heart of Darkness remains his definitive work, but End of the Tether will surprise you with its beautiful conjunction of symbols and exploration of the father/daughter relationship.

Being completely honest, this book was very hard to grasp and understand at times. I enjoyed certain aspects of it, such as the beautiful imagery and earthly, dark quality of the novel. However, it's a pretty deep book, and I still don't completely understand the purpose of the novel.

I'm sure I'll probably read it again for sheer comprehension purposes. I would recommend the book on the grounds of being one of those sorts of books everyone should read, and it's particularly effective in high school. It isn't one of my personal favorites, and I had trouble digesting it, but I would say it's a quality novel.
