Back at it with the sad girl lit. This was so immaculately written and was such an engaging analysis of human nature, relationships, and the concept of power play in sexuality. I thoroughly enjoyed the character’s inner monologue and how she struggled to justify her actions and inconsistency in her beliefs. The intricacies of her relationships were tense, provocative, and yet so elegant and carefully considered. Really made me think about my sense of moral compass, and the loyalty we feel towards people who give us a perceived sense of power.

this book sounded so interesting it took me on a journey of - what assumed to be some sort of self discovery. but in the end it lacks the revelation it builds up to.

Acts of service is at once a story and a sexual treatise. It considers sex with all of its hang ups and freedoms,  ultimately arriving at a grey space. With Romi, Eve uses the relationship to determine her worth and value (being with a "good" person). With Nathan and Olivia, Eve finds desirability and is understood for what makes her feel ashamed (she feels more wholly seen).

Sex is a tangled web of of all of this. At times, Acts of Service gets too in the weeds and you never really feel the sense of relief Eve tries to convince us she has, or it isn't worth the pay off for how tense and stressed she is for much of the book. But I suppose that is for Eve to decide herself and not me.

Jesus fuck, I don't know. It's exceptional, I'm not sure if exceptionally bad or good, but it's something. You won't like it if you hate Sally Rooney. And there's definitely way more sex than needed, even if the book is about sexual dynamics and stuff. Also too little sapphic stuff, I bought this because it was in the LGBTQ section of the book store, I wasn't really expecting reading so much about the sexual prowess of a straight guy. Still, there's something there, a real feeling, a real conflict, and the fact I'm still fighting with myself about this inspite of all the above... maybe I don't like rating books based on what's bad about them.

The book only makes sense if you assume Nathan actually did something bad to the woman who sued him.
