When two people are marooned on an island after skipping off the boat whole on an Aegean cruise. They need to learn to survive on an idyllic Mediterranean island that is rumoured to have pirate gold hidden somewhere. Just when it looks like there might be gold after all(?),  tragedy strikes and the man is taken away, and the woman is left for dead on the island.

Finally getting home the two each presume the other both dead. 

  he leaves his job and mysteriously disappears. She writes a book about the escapade, and also finds out that the gold she found on the island is both expensive and also protected as a national treasure, and she might get locked up for having it. 

I felt at many times in the story that she was about to find out that she had been tricked all along, and that her boyfriend was in league with treasure hunters, but I guess it's not that gritty a book.
