By Jove! This book is a bit complicated.

Pros: structure of the plot being told as a story in the present, description and analogies of nature

I rated this what I did, not because I despised it or felt that Conrad's writing was dry but, because I felt that it could have been so much more. By the climax I was entranced. I was fascinated by the themes he brought up. The story seemed to be building up and building to something and then just fizzled out. The themes are always hinted at or whispered about but, I want a window into Kurtz's mind; I want to read first had how he felt how he changed, and what he experienced. I would have loved to have read a tragic Lovecraftian tale from Kurtz's perspective as the jungle slowly ate away at him. That is the story I really wanted to read. In fact HP Lovecraft and Star Trek both had far more satisfying adaptions of this idea.
