This is everything a novella should be: short, packing a punch, and not necessarily worrying about the small details. There really wasn't a complicated set up, which it didn't need, and the story hurried along. It felt natural...

I thought the characters were interesting, the world building shallow but decent for the story, and the ending done well enough to be satisfied, yet wanting more. Will look forward to seeing more of these stories in the future.

A really interesting idea, but I would have liked this more as the first arc of a novel rather than a stand alone story. Well done, just not really my thing?

A quick read, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Nice job of setting up the magic and mystery and answering some of the questions (but not all).

I loved this. It reminded me of the best of old school sword & sorcery without its problems.

Interesting and well written. However I never really got interested in the mystery.

This is an interesting story with an intriguing main character. The story's main shortcoming is...that it's short. It comes in at about 60 pages on my iPad mini screen, a long short story or a very short novella. At $2.99, it's a bit pricey for what you get.

The story ends with a promising set-up for further adventures, and this story would work well as a prequel to a series. If this is, indeed, the case and the next book (due out next spring) is a full-length novel, I will look forward to it. If the series continues with more short stories at $2.99 a pop, coming out one every several months, I doubt my interest will continue despite the intriguing start.

This was an unbelievably hopeful story. I wasn’t totally sure what was happening all of the time, but neither did the narrator, which made for an enthralling experience. It was a super brief story and the stakes never felt super high, but despite all that I still managed to find myself caring deeply and truly empathizing with our narrator. Aadet was a lovely companion and the brief discussions on war throughout the story felt very poignant. The beginning was captivating, the ending heart-warming, and everything in between was just genuinely lovely to read.
