I enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end. it was an adventure. xingyin’s character development was great and inspiring. from part one to part three, she really thrived. did not expect the love triangle but the romance wasn’t overtaking the story which was great. I feel like this was a coming of age story and the romance was just that of someone growing up. I throughly enjoyed myself. I would recommend. I read with the print alongside the audiobook.
A beautiful story was told here. I was immediately rooting for Xingyin as she strives to free her mother.
The atmosphere and world created is gorgeous and mystical. I was constantly engrossed based on the strength of this alone. It felt both epic and cozy.
Xingyin goes on a very vast journey as we see her survive many years and encounter various challenges. As the story takes shape, it is one of love, determination, betrayal, and strength.
The romance and love triangle is a large part of the story. While it doesn’t bring anything new to the table, there were moments that pulled at my heart.
My biggest issue with this book is the rushed pacing. The story consistently skips ahead months and even years. This made aspects such as the world building, lore, relationships, and plot feel underdeveloped and surface level.
Normally, I would be more critical of this. But I was so immersed in the story, that I don’t mind. Also, the structure does improve during the second half.
By the ending, everything tied together nicely and I adored the journey of love and sacrifice.

Rate the world building, hated the love triangle and the main characters lack of development. Some of the things some of the characters did didn’t make sense to me but I still enjoyed the story!!!!!! Minus points because of the love triangle :/

This was a good fantasy adventure in a Chinese mythology based world.
I liked the writing and the story with a few fun twists.
The romance (love triangle) was a bit too much for me, and very standard YA.
But the atmosphere and locations were well described and very interesting.
