This book had a REALLY slow start and I almost had to DNF it, but after about the first 20% or so, it picked up and really pulled me in. The magic in this book is really intriguing to me and the separate "castes" (almost) within the world were also interesting. I will echo another review in being surprised this is being listed as adult vs YA.
The plot through-line is very simple and there are definitely things that could've been fleshed out more but weren't. Overall, I still enjoyed it and have already picked up the second book to finish off the duology.

i would say the last 2/3s of the books is good! i really HATE love triangles but this one was bearable but at the same time the romance could’ve been more developed sometimes, i felt it was kind of out of nowhere.

This a very straightforward book that reminds me of a fairytale. It was very easy read once I got a few chapters in, and I appreciate the fantasy elements to the plot and setting.
The straightforwardness did make the story a bit underwhelming. Xingyin is actually stupid, and I could not understand a lot of her decisions in the first half. Yet, everything ends up working out (ish), which wasn't very interesting to me. This book really feels like a fairytale because Xingyin does completely unrelated tasks to try to free her mother. It's the whole idea of "I'll do this super impressive thing to gain a wish," and I just dislike it. I don't really like plots where it feels like a formula. I really wish there was more to Xingyin's plan to rescue her mom.
I also found the main romance so underwhelming. The prince literally falls for her because she's not like other girls and she falls for him because he's the very first person to show her kindness.
Overall, the characters felt very flat, and the plot was too formulaic. I think its your average YA Fantasy.

This book is gorgeous! The story follows Xingyin, the daughter of the moon goddess, along her journey to free her mother. She starts as a servant then becomes a student and companion of the prince (whose parents are responsible for her mother’s imprisonment). Then she becomes a soldier and one of the fiercest warriors in the kingdom. I loved watching Xingyin grow mentally, emotionally and physically. The love triangle was a fun addition to the story. The two MMCs are great characters and I even flip flopped between who I liked best. There’s so much action and plot in this book it’s insane. There’s phenomenal imagery, the world felt so immersive and beautiful. I loved this book so much and can’t wait to read the second one.
I’m big on Chinese and Japanese mythology themed books at the moment and Daughter of the Moon Goddess was surprisingly enjoyable.
I will say I’m shocked that this is marketed as an adult fantasy, it feels very YA to me personally just with the writing style and the general angst of the characters. The plot is very simple and linear… for example there are parts that are kinda glossed over. There’s a competition that is supposed to be HUGE and it’s only a few pages? There are timeline jumps with things like ‘we fought together for a few years….’ In order to progress the story. These are a few reasons I think this is more YA than adult, it wasn’t descriptive enough to be anything more.
However I really loved this story despite all of this. Xingyin’s character and how she develops as the story progresses is amazing. She starts off very naive and slowly grows into a pretty badass archer… and she gets ANGRY and sassy
