Taking .25 stars away because it didn't hold me until the end. I liked how it ended but it kind of got away from me around 2/3 of the way through. Still a very good modern ghost story.

Diavola is a family vacation gone very, very wrong in an Italian countryside, the story layers in strange, unsettling events that can’t be explained away. While it wasn’t quite as terrifying as I expected from a horror novel, it had plenty of eerie tension, family drama, and “what the heck is happening?" Moments to keep me listening.

Favorite character has to be Anna and Justin.

Anna for not being petty. And Justin for being so damn chill

There was a good 30-50 pages where it dragged a bit for me, but I was still curious enough about the story and characters to keep reading, so it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. As someone that also has some passive aggressive, dysfunctional family members, Thorne hit the nail on the head with how maddening and heartbreaking those constant jabs can feel. Loved it. Second favorite horror read this year (and only because it’s second to The Reformatory, which is one of the best horror novels I’ve read ever, period). If Thorne has written or does write more horror novels, I’ll definitely be checking them out
