Oh my gosh there was so much happening in this book. I started it this morning, and completely flew through it. What felt like non-stop action had me hooked the whole time, wanting to know what would happen next. I was initially worried, because (if you've read the first book, which you should have) Lara and Aren are separated before this book even starts. I knew Lara had a lot of making up to do with Aren for them to stand a chance together, and I was worried that most of this book would have them separated, but not to fear! This book balanced it all out really well, and I was pleasantly surprised by this!
I was a little disappointed in the ending, in that it felt abrupt. The next few books will focus on a new couple in this world, and so while I'm fine with loose threads in big plot points, I wish we had gotten a little more conclusion to Lara and Aren's story.
Overall, this was a super exciting book! Still a little confusing with all the political intrigue, but I loved being able to read more about the different countries, and meeting new characters who sound like they'll have bigger roles in future books. It ended in a way that will keep me reading more to get some answers.

Final Thoughts:
So I started this book out by reading it but just couldn’t get into it so I switched to an audiobook. It’s weird because I didn’t hate the story. It was okay but I didn’t love it. A lot of people give this series such high ratings and maybe I didn’t get into it because I’m new to the whole fantasy genre. I wanted to love it. I have to say though, I did the love romance part of the story. I really did like Aren and I think he was just in a horrible predicament because his heart still wanted Lara but he just knew there was no way his people would accept her as his queen and he couldn’t give up the throne, so he was just between a rock and a hard place. Every time Lara needed him though, he always showed up for her. I know he was mad at her at first but I think he saw how remorseful she was and how hard she was working to gain his respect and trust and he respected her for that. The way she got them through that desert…..What Lara did at the end was brave and I think it made both her and Aren breathe a sigh of relief because they could now truly be together without the people uprising. They couldn’t have asked for a better situation than that. Now I know there was more going on like the side plot with Keris and Zarrah but a lot of that was political between the kingdoms and I see now that is where the authors tend to lose me because I have very little interest in the political aspect of fantasy stories. I’ll have to make note of that as I embark to try and read more of this genre. Note to self… stay away from political heavy fantasy….

Favorite Characters:
Lara - she stole the story for me. She made the story. I love how despite how she knew everyone was angry with her, even Aren, she set out to prove how remorseful she was and not only did fight on Aren’s country’s side (against her father) she rescued Aren from her fathers prison trekking back through the desert and through some treacherous circumstances to get him back to safety, and she eventually killed her evil father. She is no joke! She is brave, a wicked fighter/assassin, and she still has this sexy femininity about her. She proved that she is no longer the “ Traitor Queen” and is most definitely this book’s MVP.

Disliked Characters
I don’t even remember his name but Lara’s father (Silas?) was as evil as he could be and I have to say I was glad that Lara took him out. He ruled horribly! I also could stand his sidekick…I can’t remember his name but I think they called him “Magpie” or something. Just the way they tortured the people who came to their prison was disgusting.

Favorite Scene
Honestly, I was so set on giving this book a 2.5 star rating but that last 30 minutes boosted the rating! After Lara killed her father she nearly died. She got tossed into the sea. Aren went to try and save her but in order to do so she would have to swim under the small hole in the bridge. She was pretty banged up so she was basically telling him good bye. Aren confessed his love for her and told her ow he never stopped loving her. It was the sweetest thing. She did swim and made it out but just barely…she literally almost drowned in the shark infested waters. She wasn’t breathing but then she heard Aren’s voice and gained consciousness. Aren felt that is was a miracle. So sweet 🥹

❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥
So this book had very few spice scenes because obviously Aren spent a lot of the book harboring anger against Lara for betraying him,but there  was still a good amount of spicy tension between them. Their chemistry was still there. Aren especially was fighting the whole I know I’m supposed to be hating her but I still want her vibe. That time he gave in after he helped her stitch up her leg was 🔥….I mean technically she was still his wife….

😁😁
I mean it was okay. I wasn’t totally excited about listening to it. I tried to listen when I was in the mood and it just took so long to get through.

🎬🎬🎬🎬
The last like 15 minutes ate! When Aren told her she wanted her to stay Lara felt she had to refuse despite her feelings because she knew his people wouldn’t go for it since they still saw her as a traitor. But baby when he explained the way that they handled traitors in their country by putting them in the shark filled water and if the shark ate them justice was done but if the person survived punishment was served and the person was cleared. And the he filled Lara in on the fact that she was in the waters and the sharks swam right by her. Her name was cleared. Aren was going to address the people and told her to rest but man Lara got up strapped on her weapon and basically said my vow to you was to stand by you and fight with you, where you go, I go. (Mic drop) If Aren didn’t have to address the people I have a feeling  her would have taken Lara right there and then!

it’s just so boring like the same conversations, nothing is happening, politics that are confusing me, there just isn’t enough depth to the story it’s missing something. It’s acting like a SJM book but lacking stories of other people - only giving the MMC and FMC pov but they don’t even talk like we get a scene of them every 50 pages I swear
