Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

I didn’t think this was sci-fi. I mean it was. But it was a love story at heart. The love story between two friends, a slow burn type of love.

For me, it was a little slow at times because I wanted their romance to be the young love troupe thing. But Ishiguro sculpted their relationship so beautifully. By the end I was heartbroken for these two people.

Kathy was such a layered protagonist. For example, her friendship with Ruth. There were so many moments where I was thinking to myself, “Ruth is such a bad friend, Ruth is mean” but there were definitely times where I remained friends with people even though we were mean to each other at times. The relationships were realistic and fully developed. For this reason, I think the science fiction takes the backseat with this book. It’s a story about friendship and love and resilience.

I don't want to read about "donors" who need "carers" because they often don't survive long after the donations.
