I don't think it would pass the Bechdel Test (one female character had some complexity, but most of the others were pretty flat/put on a pedestal by the male characters as objects to obtain or protect).

But OTHERWISE a satisfying, layered mystery and great spooky/gothic fall read.

I read this for my "Translated" book for Summer book bingo. Some of the prose was beautiful, but ultimately the story fell flat for me, I got bored and had to force myself to finish. I won't be continuing the series. That said, every scene with Fermin was enjoyable - what a wonderful character.

I hadn't read this for years and I think it just got better. I ended it in tears and that's something that books rarely ever do for me anymore.

This one is a weird one to rate, although I like the concept I think the way the story has been told is a little bit convoluted. I love the writing, although some of the characters sounded like they were just repeating phrases that the author himself would say but maybe this was lost in translation?
The story focuses too much on one character, and not enough to flesh out the other. In fact the other character's backstory is revealed by a letter which just feels a bit cheap. I think if the story had chosen a focal point and it would have flowed a lot better together.

I am completely blown away by this book. I don't know why I didn't know about it till now! Definetely one of my favourites.

Beautiful & captivating writing that brought the setting of Barcelona to life with such an air of mystery. The story was slow to start but the pace was enjoyable because of the descriptive writing and the images brought to life. The last quarter of the book was so exciting and intense I was thoroughly invested, and brought to tears by the ending of the story. I really really enjoyed this book :)
