It's 3 in the morning, I have a cracking headache, I'm hungry, I'm grumpy... But I was spellbound, I think I read the last third of this book in a trance. I just had to know what happened. This is unusual for me, I have a lousy attention span.

It was a beautifully written masterpiece of stories within stories within mysteries within stories. A young boy discovers a book that he falls in love with and spends years trying to unravel the story behind the long lost author and the paths he crossed. It's a book about books and the power that words wield, it borrows elements of thriller and elements of comedy but most of all it's a story about love (in all it's incarnations) at its most fierce and destructive.

My favourite thing about the book is how beautifully written it is - the flamboyant descriptions and poetic phrasings seem natural to me, where in other books it can seem like the writer is vomiting up chunks of half-digested thesaurus - Zafon pulls it off. It's beautiful.

My other favourite thing is the upbeat philosopher Fermin. He's a great character - lively and funny where the subject matter is serious. Other than a strategic use of fart jokes, there's not much comic relief - Fermin is brilliant, really cheers up the book.

The Darth Vader/ Bond Villain-esque Fumero is as hateable as Fermin is likeable and drives the thriller element forward.

In fact, apart from the fact that I felt compelled to keep reading through an awful migraine, I hardly have anything bad to say about it at all. There are a few inconsistencies in the narrative and the word 'mantle' is overused (probably a translation issue) but other than that... Just positives.

I highly recommend The Shadow of the Wind to anybody, particularly if you like a bit of soul-crushing romance or just love books and everything they represent.

Oisin antanu viis tähtee, mut Fermin oli liian horny + misigynistinen ni 4,5.

hea ju

enne viimast neljandikku arvasin et soovitan seda kõigile

näppu sattus juhuslikult
poe allahinnatud raamatute letilt
mis etteruttavalt sobis tuule varju looga kokku

krõbedalt alanud raamat hakkas ajapikku
muutuma odavamaks (oojeee, odav!)
ja natuke veel odavamaks (ohjessus, oo-daav!)

kui hinda liiga palju alla lasta
läheb asi kahtlaseks

tutikas korter barcelonas
23 eurot

hmmmmm

tuule vari astus piirist üle ja
läks lõpuks magusaks
nagu esimest korda söödud suhkruvatt või
biojäätmete prügikast

üks kahest

Kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Beautiful descriptive language, really leans into the gothic elements of Barcelona. A treat to read in spanish.
