Mixed feelings. On the one hand a pretty great story with fun puzzles, but at times it was just boring/weird and the puzzles just got in the way. Plus, the title, Runaway Princess, when only in the first story she truly ran away to have a ball at a festival. It reminded me a bit of Abarat, just less dark. But just as weird. Haha. The world and all that inhabits it, wow. There are tiny people who can grow if they grow their hair, there is a city that looks like Venice and has a big wonderful parade, there is a pumpkin witch. And oh yes, so so SO many references. From Moby Dick to the Little Prince.
I am glad that I had the chance to read this one. While feeling mixed on the feels, I had some good times with this one. The girl will definitely make a good queen given how kind and compassionate she is.

I’m not sure if anyone else remembers the book Puzzle Mountain, where each page consisted of mazes, puzzles, and things you have to spot, but that is this book in graphic novel form.

I really enjoyed the whimsy in this graphic novel, and especially delighted in the interactive pages sprinkled throughout the book (think Hervé Tullet but for 8-12 year olds), breaking the fourth wall to invite the reader into the action but spread just far enough apart to not overwhelm the story.

I never heard of The Runaway Princess until a few days ago, when I saw it in a public library shelf and picked it up. I glanced at the blurb, making it seem intriguing, although it's targeted at a younger audience. I picked it up and read it, and when I closed the final page, it was a unique reading experience.

First, The Runaway Princess is not one cohesive novel. It consists of three separate stories, cohesive by themselves but unrelated to each other, and incohesive when combined. They all start with the first person I see, Robin, escaping from her castle to go with her friends, other minor protagonists. I thought based on the blurb that The Runaway Princess would be about breaking stereotypical gender roles, but no. Instead, it's three long stories exploring this high or whimsical fantasy world meeting other characters and discovering new places as seen on the maps before every narrative begins. It gets repetitive over time but sometimes I get to interact with The Runaway Princess when it tells me to do certain actions or complete puzzles, which is a unique touch. The art is all in aesthetically pleasing watercolour, but the characters are only okay and lack depth, which is a shame because there are others in other compositions that don't. At least it was enjoyable.

Cute, fast paced graphic novel about a princess who goes on adventures. There’s not much in terms of cohesive plot, but it’s cute, the art is full color and beautiful, and I liked the reader moments where they ask the reader to turn the book or solve little puzzles.

This is a wackadoo little graphic novel about a princess girl who wants to have adventures in her wackadoo, colorful, fanciful, magical kingdom which is vast and where you can ride in bubbles and talk to animals and ride on floating fish and meet colorful little friends who help rescue you from a fall farmer girl who wants the princess as a sister and also wants to cook her for dinner. The reader is asked to solve mazes and shake the book to help solve a pickle. If you want immersion in a magical world where your mother the queen can float around and where you’re not just a good little princess who sits around the castle, give this whimsical graphic novel a try.
