The author does a great job in researching the historical accuracy of the characters and locations.
Kate and Peter’s relationship has many ups and downs but regardless of the circumstances, they’re both loyal to each other.
The villains do have intense scenes/conversations with the main heroes so the stakes are high.
There are some adult situations so be on the lookout for certain triggers.

This book is not at all what I expected, and I actually found parts of it distasteful. I don't like reading about sex used as a weapon or manipulative tool, even when story lines have "love" growing out of it. I also didn't find Kate/Lydia's character convincing; a girl raised a strict Quaker does not change so quickly and thoroughly without being heavily conflicted. I didn't' bother to finish the book.
I was surprised by how much I liked this. I have always been a historical romance reader but lately the books in that genre haven't impressed me. The Turncoat straddles being on the more historical fiction side in regards to the complexity of the plot surrounding the romance. There's lots of spying and action and while I didn't totally buy into the romance, it was still interesting enough that I would read more by the author.
I didn't finish this book. I got halfway through the third chapter when I turned off the audio and decided that this wasn't a book for me. I was excited to start this, as I don't read a lot of historical fiction, and this seemed like an interesting premise, but I was sorely disappointed in the first bit by the main characters and their unbelievable personalities.
I definitely can't say I recommend this, its just not the book for me.

I was in the mood for some seasonal reading close to Independence Day. When I did a search for Revolutionary War period books this series came up several times. A quick paced novel that has individuals falling in love at first sight (eye roll for this cynic), shooting black powder guns with startling accuracy, rapid expertise into spy like ways in a matter of months, etc. so willful suspension of disbelief is necessary. A nice seasonal summer read. I've started another by the author and am impressed with the research into 1700's sailing and impressment practices that she has done. But that's for another review.

Read for romance book club. I figured there had to be a historical romance that took place during the American Revolution, and here it is. I really enjoyed this and will continue with the series.
DNF'd 10% in. I just didn't like these characters. They started off shaky for me. Like he's coercing her into having sex with him. And then I heard from other people that there is a rape scene about 15% in so I just decided to drop it. Not for me unfortunately.
Engaging historical fiction
The author weaves fact and fiction into a fast-paced adventure starring fearless female spies who hold the fate of the revolution in their hands.
