What a great story! From wallflower to wife, Mina's character is supportive from the start and hopes for so much more than Simon is ready to give her. What's more, when he fails time and again to give her enough, her emotional journey felt very realistic with each up and down spike of feeling that is or isn't returned in kind. The characters at his estate are quite the cast, and her way of dealing with all of it made me both laugh and cry. This is no easy love story, but it felt so much better when they made it through to the end.

There’s a lovely romance buried somewhere under a lot of stubbornly obtuse characters, repetitive inner monologues, and poor copyediting.

I'm a fan of a good "she falls first" and "unrequited love" story but wow did my head hurt every time Simon hurt Mina, and I don't even like main characters like Mina too much but she just had my constant sympathy.
Prose and writing wise, if anyone likes the setting and vibes of the regency/georgian era but finds classics too intimidating to start with yet, this is an alright beginning to it honestly, very easy to read (or in my instance, listen) and follow the story. It carries lots of modern day values that, if you're a regency buff, might be a turn-off, but I would approach this with the Bridgerton mindset that it's a "fantasy regency world" and not an accurate one.
Anyway, Simon should have groveled more for Mina but that's just my preference.

Simon was a bacon-brained nincompoop and an idiot of the highest order. He balanced it by being a genuinely nice human being so you couldn’t hate the guy but man did he need a smack to the head to wake up and realize the amazing woman right in front of him that he was constantly inadvertently hurting. Mina was amazing and gracious and kind and forgiving and Simon absolutely didn’t deserve her. But since she loved the giant halfwit I was glad he finally came around even if it took utterly too long!!Despite being frustrated with Simon I did love this book and definitely recommend it, it’s totally worth a read!
I wasn't too sure about this book, its very unrequited love at the start from Simon's point of view with Susannah and Mina with Simon himself.
This book grows on you though, like a weird fascination with them you find yourself very invested in Simon and ultimately him waking up and realising Mina is the one for him too. Its pretty difficult to like Simon at the start, hes a bit of a fool and he isn't very thoughtful to Mina's feelings which is a shame. However he does realise his mistake and gets a lot nicer, eventually.
