Crombie sets her story in the Notting Hill section of London. While Kincaid and James are moving forward in their respective jobs, they intersect when a murder in James' territory shows similarities to one that Kincaid worked on previously. They have to figure out how to make their working and personal relationships work out in this latest book of the series.

Although I personally think a lot of the titles in this series are melodramatic, they are definitely a really good read. I've been skipping around in the series. In this book, Gemma is no longer partners with Duncan, but they are lovers. She is now a DI in her own "patch" as they call it. When a beautiful young woman is found brutally murdered, Duncan insinuates himself into the case because it is reminiscent of a similar murder that took place a couple of months before and remains unsolved. However, he also misses being with Gemma. Meanwhile Gemma is pregnant. The book also charts their personal relationship as Duncan proposes they move into a rental home he has found. Gemma agrees then wonders if she is doing the right thing. She has been accustomed to being on her own for a long time. I read the book that came right after this one so it wasn't a surprise that she lost the baby. As in so many of her books, the root of the crime is in the past and the ending is really a surprising twist.

A great traditional mystery series with the added bonus of the developing relationship between the two main characters.
