It struck me that I read Deborah Crombie's books with a pattern: 10 to 20 pages per night before bed until I get about 2/3s of the way to the end, and then she really has me hooked on the story and I don't put it down until I finish. Fortunately this often happens on a Saturday morning.
This installment was especially enjoyable, as it focused both on Duncan and Gemma's personal life and on the most recent murder case, this time in Notting Hill, near where they have chosen to move together with their little family. Crombie weaves the past into the current day and inserts bits of immigrant history into the story, making it all the more compelling.

Inspector Gemma James is called to a murder scene and starts investigating the death of the wife of antiques dealer. She is also in the process of moving into a house with her son, her partner and his son, a cat and a dog. It's Christmas time and she is also pregnant and has just acquired another dog. Her partner, who is also a cop, thinks the murder is similar to one he investigated several.months prior
The two work on finding the connection between the two cases and who the killer is. They have moved into the area where Gemma is stationed.and she has been getting to know some of the locals in the area and worries that her being friendly with these people could interfere with her job. The story swaps back and forth between the present case and years earlier in the same area. It is later revealed that the person featured in the earlier time has a connection to the current case
Good descriptions of the area. Lots of suspects and goes thru the process of elimination of each and the fact that the cops have to deal with he issues along with work and sometimes they intertwine.
