Jack Vance was a master. The dialogue and scheming in this book are excellent.

An entertaining series of stories about Jack Vance's trickster-like character, Cugel, as he travels home to revenge himself on the magician who banished him (again) to a faraway land.

I am not happy giving great Jack Vance so low rate. But I do not have any choice - while first 2 installments of the series received solid 3*, I cannot do anything else but give that book a little bit less - 2*. This is just the worst book of the three.
Like previous books, that one consists of short stories. And first few are very good. But then quality of them decreases. They are repetitive. Usually there is (of course) Cugel and some other guy. Both try to outwit each other. More often Cugel losses (what we have not seen in previous book). I would ok if there were few stories less - the book is way too long. I think twice longer than previous installments.
The most important the book doesn’t give something new to the series. It is not so fresh like previous. And this feeling of dying world is almost faded in this part. Which is bad.
