This book feels like grief personified. There’s so much longing and heartache, it’s beautiful. Stronger than the first in every way and really is probably a 5 but I’m holding space for Oathbound.

We definitely need more stories like this!

If you have read and enjoyed One Dark Window/Two Twisted Crowns, I think you might like this one as well (there was so much that reminded me of that duology).

I did rate it slightly lower than the first one because although it was action packed, it was sometimes too fast paced and felt rushed, which made it confusing at several points. I also had some issues with the character development and relationships between Bree, Sel, and Nick (love triangle where?).

While I missed the academia setting, there were so many cool new settings that were introduced such as the underground bar and, of course, Volition. The themes of intergenerational trauma, cycle breaking, impact of slavery and plantations in the south and the underground railroad, were all represented here (read the author's note for some further explanation of the themes if you are curious). There were times where I was reading and thought that it could easily be a new adult or adult fantasy novel.

Lastly, I just picked up Oathbound (book 3) from the library, and have now realized that it is not going to be a trilogy and there is one more book coming. I wish I knew that before going in, because I thought it was already a completed series, and now I'm worried that I might forget the plot of the first 3 books by the time book 4 comes out... that's on me though.
