This book was still very good, but unfortunately it didn’t hit quite in the way the first one did. In this one we explore more of the love triangle (or love-entanglement, as the author calls it), which is something that happens a lot in YA, and I just never like. This book had a lot less action in it, and I felt a little lost at times with how complicated and complex the world was. I also have to say that I’m team Nick through and through, and that while I like Sel just fine, I did really notice Nick’s absence in this book. Overall, a really solid addition into the series, but in my opinion weaker than the other two books.

This was a dense book. There was so much information that it was hard to follow at certain points. I enjoyed the story progression and hope to learn more in book 3.

Briana Matthews is back again for the second installment of the Legendborn series. It has a similar issue that a lot of second books have in a series, giving you a lot of information and not enough to continually keep your attention. This one started off a little slow then picked up quick. It kept the intrigue and mysteries that appeared in book one while adding some more interesting characters and small twists. I loved that Bree was able to to figure out her lineage, but the entire 'main character looking for mentors' plot-line dragged on just a little more than I would like.
I still have a bit of difficulty understanding the Legendborn but I did really enjoy the addition involving the Shadowborn. Some of my favorite scenes included the bar where you get to meet Valec (probably one of my new favorite characters) and the entire scene where Bree, William, and Selwyn were attempting to escape their captors. Everything else felt almost drawn out and slower than normal. It took me a few months to get through this second title and that surprises me because I loved the first one so much.
Also I was feeling annoyed with the whole Alice situation and I'm just ready for an entire chapter of "it's my fault you're like this" monologue of the next book, if I do give it a go.
I didn't hate this book at all, but I am disappointed. I also got myself stuck in a reading slump. I was so close to finishing it for almost a month and just finally pushed through. I don't know exactly what the full issue was but I think it was the combination of the random encounters of Nick not making sense and the drawn out running for our lives plotline that got old for me. I am a little curious on what the third book has to offer but I'm afraid I may get these same feelings.
For anyone who has read the third, how would you say the pacing was? Because I think that may have been my biggest issue. Would you recommend me giving it a read? It's embarrassing how much I loved the first one and yet the second one just didn't do it for me.
