“This Summer is breaking my heart into pieces, to reveal a new and better heart that only beats for her.”
the story was really nice and heartbreaking.
i had an issue with the prose, it felt very “tell not show” and i felt like i didn’t work too hard since a majority of things were told to me. But there were some moments that were written very poetically that they were emotional to read.
Poor Martin 😭
The obsession with spit and the part where Susannah was obsessed with the dirt under Lucy’s nails that she was biting out was ???? uhhh…
I mean you do you.

This was really good. Sad. Very intense. Felt like being inside the main characters mind, you could feel the obsession.

this for me is one of those books where you don't know how you feel about it while you are reading it and you think eh it's okay, i kind of want it to be over, and then when you finish it, you take a breath and go, 'oh okay that was very beautiful and well done'.
i think i struggled with the main character too much to really love this book. although it's the point of the story, i just found her too frustrating and hard to sink into. the writing was also of course, perfectly lyrical, but at times it felt almost just too overdone?
the story, though, i liked a lot. i liked the coming of age side to it as well. it's a very realistic portrayal of girlhood and thought patterns.
and MARTIN oh MARTIN, at the end, when he found out and hugged her and was so gentle, a tear fell from my eye, i could not deal. i wanted to give him a hug.
