The Last Humans is a post apocalypse novel by Steven M. Moore. This book starts with the release of a deadly contagion in a scenario that wasn’t completely thought out by the attackers. But the consequences are undeniable…millions of lives lost, and a world thrown into chaos as survivors simply try to survive all the changes, and the new dangers. While there are those who are intent on revenge, the desire for power, and the trappings of the vacuum created.
The Last Humans is a slower paced novel, but it really is interesting. I like that the author begins the story with the origin of the virus that decimates the world. They intended to destroy America, but the virus sweeps around the world taking millions with it. Years have passed, and the author is focusing on Penny Castro and her husband Alex as they are simply striving to survive in this “new world order.” Too bad someone doesn’t want to let them live in peace with their children. They are being “recruited” back into the military to seek revenge…whether they want to be or not. The author goes from various places in the United States to overseas where there have been some unique changes for a once divided country.
The characters are interesting to an extent, but I found them to be a bit bland as well. I wanted to get some spice from them or at least more from the situations that they found themselves in. While the storyline starts out a little rocky in the beginning once it gains its footing it gets better. The author brings up a lot of situations that apparently happened in a previous book which piques my interest to find out what happened with them before all of this that’s now going on. The author pops back into the past in certain scenes in this book, and I would have liked it if these shifts back and then forth would have been more clearly marked.
I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m taking off half a star because I felt the pace was a bit too slow at times, but the story really pulled me along and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next and how things were going to play out with the variety of characters and situations that they all find themselves in. If you enjoy post apocalypse novels with engaging storylines then this book is a good choice.
