It was hard rating this 3 stars. I can feel all of the effort placed into this collection and the emotion it intended to invoke. Overall, it felt more like an older woman’s pain more than anyone’s rage. Maybe the title threw me a bit. Idk. But it didn’t give what I was hoping it would.

I’ve always loved poetry, so when I saw this title I picked it up to read in black history month.
I’m glad I did.

Wow. Just wow.

The pain and longing in this poetry is so visceral and raw that I could feel my gut clenching with the
force of the words chosen. It's powerful.

I'll never completely understand the lives that black men, women, and children live ... the deeply rooted fears they bear, the psychological scars they wear because of the choices white men made to devalue human beings. How can I, when the world I live in has been formed to systemically elevate me? But reading this gives me a gut punch, and I can only echo the words of the author in her own words, " I am the muted prayer that we will see each other clearly one day." , and then pray that prayer with her.

There were some really great lines/phrases, not necessarily my style of poetry. The storytelling was good.
