***
I chose this book thansk to the cover... it seemed to be ironic, funny, curious and colorful. And I would say that, in part, this book is so... there are the colors and the frenzy of life in an Indian metropolis and there are bizarre and funny episodes, but in part this novel is quite the opposite: some chapters are too descriptive and verbose, others are a bit boring and the novel flawed in the secondary characters, who are so secondary as to be little more than specks in the background.

A fantastic debut, filled with lots of twists and turns. Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the storyline. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Despite the violence, vast injustices the main character works to expose, and the thrilling terror of near-death encounters, my overwhelming impression of this book is that it's adorable. One of my favorite troupes EVER is the married couple that are still in love after many years of marriage, and Chopra and his wife fit that bill, even when they're not at their best. They are SO CUTE together- both of them are so thoughtful and loving toward each other, but also SO SASSY, it's hilarious. Add in the equally adorable (and hilarious) interactions between them and the elephant (that's not too much of a spoiler, right? I mean, THERE'S AN ELEPHANT ON THE COVER soooo) and this book is just too cute! Ugh. I'm probably going to have to read the rest of the books in the series now.
A fun mystery. Inspector Chopra is a likeable protagonist and his sidekick is adorable
A by-the-numbers mystery plot, but the titular Inspector Chopra bonding with a recalcitrant baby elephant was entirely charming.
