Not a bad book, but I have no desire to read more in the series. It's a helpful reminder of why I rarely read books by straight men. (also file as: the author thinks his main character is a good husband who treats women well, but I am not convinced.)
There were some cute parts of this book - like a BABY ELEPHANT!!! - but overall I felt kind of meh about it. I got tired of reading about how noble the main character was despite the fact that he kept doing really reckless things that should have killed him. He does lots of very selfish (and often illegal) things but tries to shield himself from blame or guilt by deciding that he has no choice but to seek justice, gosh darn it! He doesn't seem to think the laws apply to him, but of course his ego had nothing to do with it. ;P
There's also a subplot with his wife that was completely disconnected from the main drama and felt like a kind of weird detour. If anything, it made me more upset that he kept trying his darndest to make her a widow. There were some interesting descriptions of Mumbai but I'm not planning to seek out any more of the books by this author.

Took a leap of faith couple of years ago to read Vaseem khan's inspector Chopra and baby Ganesh agency series. Surely an unexpected discovery I made in the world of crime fiction books and indeed one of the best decisions I've made so far.
Vaseem khan is an intelligent writer, and a focused storyteller. He threads through the chaotic Mumbai throngs as he sets his case and it's premises.
He doesn't go in circles and that's what I adore most in his writing because each step to solving the crime is carefully layered. The plot and the justifications are well-thought-out.
Khan writes of the undercurrents of corruption, warped mentality, social class prejudices, political expediency, malleable justice always exploited by the wealthy and powerful, in India.
It's written prolifically and makes you reflect on the justice system. I've known my country's law follows India's constitutional criminal law and reading stories revolving it makes the read all the more intriguing.
Although retired, Chopra (the book character) is a thrill lover deep down, a good sort of stubbornness and the thirst to solve mysteries (his brain is such). I've enjoyed his character as many times it has resonated with me as a person.
Chopra leaves no stone unturned in his conviction to stop a committed criminal. As the plot thickens, the oh-so adorable Baby Ganesh pulls out an intelligent stunt in the nick of time. He's the ideal sidekick to Chopra because he's psychic intuition literally helps Chopra in finally kick-starting the little 'click' in his head. The deadly duo and their true animalistic instincts: experienced Chopra along with the intuitive elephy cannot be thwarted as they hunt down malicious criminals who certainly deserved to be punished with a lawful rigour.
Magnetic read and 5 smashing golden stars
