This was a re-read for me. I originally read this back in the early 80s after seeing the film Kes. This re-visit was as magical as the first time I read the book. Nothing straight-forward here; the book has humor and sadness in equal measure and whilst there is certainly despair there is also hope.
The story is set in 60s Yorkshire and the author's descriptive style conjures up an image of rural England that contrasts sharply with the less than ideal life that surrounds the young protagonist.
If you haven't read this already you certainly should. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
