This book is misery. You know those fancy literary books where everyone is miserable and not much happens? Yeah, this is one of those books. Every single character is unhappy and just slogs through life. Unfortunately, this makes the book a slog to read, especially because I didn't connect with any of the characters. I found it very hard to care about them or to like them. Most of the characters are one-dimensional, to the point that they do and say the same things in each chapter. Constant misery is dull and like many of the characters, I just felt like giving up.

The book is also a mess. It is really badly organised and there are far too many characters and not enough plot. Subplots appear and disappear at random and often go nowhere. We get introduced to characters only for them to disappear again. There is no reason for it to be 600 pages long, that's about 3 times too long. There are pages and pages of needless description and time wasting.

There are the occassional jokes and normal moments (not many) which prevents it from getting only one star. The plot does pick up in the second half and things actually start to happen. Towards the end there is some payoff for enduring that far, but not enough for it to be worthwhile.
