I received One Small Thing from Netgalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed it. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
I did not expect to get this book, but I was very happy that One Small Thing was my first Erin Watt book I read. I liked her style and definitely want to check out more of her stuff now.
One Small Thing deals with a family who is trying to pick up the pieces after their loved one died. Beth's parents deal with her sister's death by being extremely protective of her; almost to the point that they try to control her entire life. Beth spends most of the book trying to do her own thing anyway. And then she accidentally meets Charles.
Her friendship with Charles is basically like a screwed up Romeo and Juliet relationship, or a Spencer/Toby relationship from Pretty Little Liars. (I kept picturing those two during the whole book. I basically shipped them throughout the whole book.
The writing was well done and I even forgot the fact that I was reading an ARC book because I was enjoying it so much. I just liked all of the plots and turns and one particular scene at the very end. I'm trying not to spoil much here because I don't want to spoil the plot. I also read this book in a day, which is hard for me to do these days. I stayed up late reading it also when I shouldn't have.
Basically, you will want to read One Small Thing because it will tug at your heart because of all the emotions and characters. It was a five star read for me. I really didn't have anything bad to say about this. Thank you Netgalley and publishers for letting me read this!

Oh my goodness! So good! I waited way too long to pick it up!
This was a story full of angst, hurt, young love and loss. Elizabeth older sister Rachel was killed three years ago and her parents were a bit overprotective because they already lost one child and was protecting the one that was alive. But the way they went about it was a bit extreme that Beth was rebelling. She was a senior in high school and felt like she couldn’t do anything because she was stuck as the sister of the dead girl. Then she meets Chase at a party when she was rebelling and she was mesmerized. Surprise surprises she approached him and they hit it off. One thing led to another and then they never saw each other again. Until school started and she realized Chase was her sister’s killer and he realized Beth was the sister of the girl he killed. He was disgusted with himself and Beth was in shock.
Beth was so confused with her feelings for Chase but then she started seeing another side of him. Beth was the only person that saw the good in Chase. He tried to stay away but Beth was persistent. Especially when the entire school started bullying him. The bullying in this book and the things that were said to both Beth and Chase made me so upset that I wanted to go thru the book and hit someone. It was so unfair and my heart broke for both of them. Poor Beth was in the middle of everything and dealing with so much. Her parents were unbearable and blinded by lots of things which is understandable since they lost a child but still. Chase handled everything like a champ. You never got much of a reaction from him and he kept his cool for everything. But you can see that he was developing feelings for Beth even though he didn’t feel it was right.
Now there was a twist in the story that I figured was going to involve this particular person. I wish this story also had Chase POV because it would’ve been good to get his insight on certain situations. The ending I liked but I felt like it was left opened for a continuation.

I loved this book. Erin Watt's books just have this way about them, where they grab you and pull you in. The characters are always complicated but you side with them and ultimately just want them to be happy.
