Let me start by saying-this book nails the whimsical, fairytale vibes. The writing is lush, the world is enchanting, and the romance has that addictive, star-crossed pull. But oh my goodness, Evangeline tested my patience.
I wanted to shake her. I wanted to sit her down for a stern best-friend lecture. Her wide-eyed naivety and stubborn optimism crossed the line from endearing to exhausting. (I kept waiting for her to wise up, but alas.) (good thing there's Jacks in the story or else...)
That said, the book’s magic is undeniable. If you can power through the heroine’s questionable choices, there’s a glittering, darkly romantic story underneath, one that does get better in the sequels (thank heavens I gave a chance to the next books).
