I'll be honest this was really hard to follow along with. I guess it says a lot about my ability to read poems and old text. I'm glad this book had so much additional content. It helped form the story once I finished. The Pearl was a trudge. Sir Orfeo was probably my favorite story but I think it was because it was short and easier to follow. The book was awesome and very thankful to Mariner books for sending me a copy to read and review. Now to watch the movie!!

I quite liked Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I just thought the part at the castle was a bit too long and unintesting. Pearl I couldnt get into at all and Sir Orfeo was just okay. So the individual ratings would be like 4/5, 1/5, 2/5.

But I'm not a big poetry fan anyway so that definitely has an influence as well.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Tolkien's introductions helped me appreciate the context, although Pearl ended up being far more religious than I initially expected.

Every time I read about Orpheus I feel a bit annoyed. The audacity to rip Eurydice out of the Elysian fields always frustrates me, like her living without him was so unbelievable to him. I think Orpheus's problem is he fails at imagination.

When I bought a copy of this, the British shopkeep tried to convince me to buy the modern translation instead. Should I be offended by this?? I live in Boston everyone here has a PhD and is a huge asshole about it so this feels like it was specifically targeted at his assumption of my reading level lol
