I loved being inside Olivia’s head.
“I have condensed into a few score of pages the history of a whole year when life was, if not at its fullest, at any rate at its most poignant-that year when every vital experience was the first, or, if you Freudians object, the year when I first became conscious of myself, of love and pleasure, of death and pain, and when every reaction to them was as unexpected, as amazing, as involuntary as the experience itself”
“How can one bathe without undressing, or write without laying bare one’s soul?”
“How hard it is to kill hope! Time and time again you think you have stepped it down, stamped it to death. Time and time again, like a harmful insect, it begins to move again, it shakes back to a faintly shaking life. Once again it worms its way into one's heart, to infuse its poison, to gnaw away the solid hard foundation of life and leave the cave in their place phantom of illusion.”

A wonderful book about what it’s like falling in love for the first time, the feeling of being in love before you even recognize what it is. 4.5/5 stars, the half a point being because it was way too short and I wanted it to keep going.
