The Player Hater

Jesus, this book was tedious to get through! The reader has to wade through a lot of inane conversations and inner dialogue disguised as - humor? - I guess, although I found it more juvenile than funny.

The heroine was bitchy, judgmental, and a shit friend, but then, her bestie wasn't much better in that department.

The hero was okay, but he had a decidedly feminine 'voice'. If his chapters weren't labeled as HIS, I might've thought they were a girl's thoughts. A teenage girl's.

Partway into the beginning of chapter four was about all the absurdity I could stand. DNF@34%.

Thoughts: Good read, will continue!

This is one of the lowest angst books I've read in some times. It was just a good, fun time. Juliet is talked into a getaway with her best friend and the BF's boyfriend. Add in another friend (Davis, our H) a funny meet-cute and a lot of banter, you have this quick read which is the start of a new series. While Juliet didn't make the best first impression, Davis and his entire adorableness more than made up for some bratty behaviour. If you're looking for a light, fun read, you might have a lot of fun with this. I volunteered to read and review an early copy of this. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this forced proximity story.
Davis is such a contradiction. He can go from being petrified of bears and second guessing himself to hauling Juliet upstairs for sexy times. He is sweetly sentimental and looking for a soul mate but picking all the wrong ladies in the past but still keeps trying.
Sara is brilliant at writing stories that take the time to develop the characters, feeling and relationships with words, flirting and conversation. Sometimes the scenes are so romantic and sometimes they are so awkward that you wonder what in the world is happening.
This story really sets up this series nicely and I look forward to more of them.

Juliet is going on the vacation kicking and screaming, imagine her shock what her dreams a beachlife is a glamper beside a lake. Not only that she has a share with a strange guy name Davis her best friends boyfriend best friend. It seems like an odd matchmaking scheme of the besties on the shores of the lake quickly turn into a weird sense of one up manship. Juliet and Davis are funny pair who truly put their worst foot forward with one another, but still find their match with each other. Ney crazy sense of humor is all this book that takes dating disasters to a whole new level.

ACK!!!!

Oh how I love Davis. I love his outlook. His heart. His spirit.

I love the internal monologues. Especially Juliet's. She is me. I am her.

This book will make you want more. More of the before. More of the after. More of what's to come next.

Ya'll this was a rough one to get through for me! I wanted so desperately to love this book, and to a certain extent I did--it just wasn't as much as I wanted to.

What I Liked:
Sara Ney did deliver her signature sass and romcom-esque gold that I've always enjoyed; which made the book fun and lighthearted. I enjoyed seeing reading a book in a different setting than we have seen in her other series/books. The Low angst was perfection after reading back to back high angst stories--a pallet cleanser for the soul this book was!

What I Didn't Like:
From the jump, I had a hard time losing myself in the story and unfortunately the characters didn't work for me in the slightest. But the biggest thing that made this an 'eh' read was how unfulfilling the ending was for me--I felt like we were missing a decent chunk of the end that I went back to make sure my ebook wasn't corrupted. I don't know, I went in expecting a full blown HEA but instead got a...softish HEA? I wouldn't even call it an HFN (Happy For Now) because I'm not even sure what exactly their relationship evolved to by the end of the story.

Player Hater sets up the next book in the series so well that I started to think this was a world building/character introductory novel (Big Novella Energy this one), to which I'm excited to see Penelope's story come to life!

Big thanks to the author for giving me an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This book is an easy and fun read but it did start out rocky for me because well Juliet came across as horrible. Juliet’s friend, Mia, wants her to come on a mini vacation with her and her new boyfriend so they can get to know each other better and to say that Juliet is less than thrilled would be a huge understatement. Juliet is bitter, thinks because her friend’s boyfriend is a famous football player and she makes a lot of judgmental statements and comments instead of just being supportive of her friend. I get that she just didn’t want her friend to get hurt but she was super over the top. When she reluctantly agrees to a free vacation she gets snotty about it being camping and not a tropical location, then she proceeds to get snotty with Thad’s (Mia’s BF) friend. She insults them, acts all high and mighty, and even Davis tells her how obnoxiously immature she is acting. At this point I was like 20-30% in and she was still being incredibly judgmental and annoying so I knew she would have to really do something or change her attitude quick for me to like her at all. Davis and Thad were very likable characters that seemed down to Earth and not at all as Juliet thought. There were moments when things happened that had me smiling or laughing, but it wasn’t until about halfway in that Juliet starts to lighten up and actually get to know Davis that she becomes more like able. It took some time but once we get to see underneath her hard exterior we see a decent human who just wants her friend happy as well as find her own happiness. As we get to see Davis and Juliet start to learn about each other things start to heat up yet there is still some things holding them back. The more time they spent together the more I started to come around to Juliet because Davis deserves happiness and if he found that in Juliet then it made me happy. Over all this was a quick read, with funny, moments, and quick romance that tests your patience with Juliet but fall madly for the sweetheart that is Davis. Very curious about Davis’ sister and that ending.

This is going to sound awful, and I really hate it, but I was not a fan of this one. The characters were very lack luster for me. Ugh. I just didn't care for it. At. All.
