I guess I wasn't sure what to expect but I was hoping for a bad assed globe-trotting adventure to stop a catastrophic fungal outbreak and what I got was an intimate clusterfuck with a bunch of barely likeable characters in an underground storage unit.

It wasn't horrible and it was such a quick read I didn't mind but it just wasn't what I was expecting.

This book was received as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think this is the fastest I've finished a book in months, the concept of a fungus destroying humanity an honestly great hook, but there's so much more to it than that. The world felt real, and like there were real stakes the majority of the book, which is refreshing in any form of apocalypse fiction nowadays. The writing feels like you're watching a movie, which is to be expected from an author with so many credits to screenplays; however there's a downside to that. It reads like a screenplay in some sections, which can get very... Old. There's some sections that feel overly descriptive for the sake of it, and there are parts that feel rushed so they can be more action-y, which can be a little disorienting.

I was also fairly disappointed at the lack of character development; there wasn't enough time to get attached to anyone because it felt like we were constantly getting characters thrown at us. Teacake and Naomi were surprise hits for me, though, they were fun and genuinely interesting as main characters and had some good chemistry. I wish we saw more of
SpoilerTrini,
but I understand her place in the story being finished. All in all, a really fun book that kept me hooked for a good few days.
