I am a big fan of fairy tales. I like how they set you into another world and make nonsense seem almost real for just a little while. I had never been exposed to the Grimm fairy tales previously, only to the Disney remakes. After reading this book, I have come to love both even more. The Grimm's embraced the darkness of fairy tales. It quite intrigued me. My favourite part of reading this book was the illustrations. They were unusual. It took me quite a long time to finally finish reading it, about seven months, which is quite out of the ordinary for me, but you can only read fairy tales for so long until you need a little break. I do recommend this book to any fan of fairy tales, or just need a little fantasy in a mundane world. I doubt you will be disappointed.

It's hard to read and repetitive. Every story is a variation of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty. There's lots of long paragraphs, little dialogue, and the narrative does little to evoke imagination. Everything happens in sets of threes, and I know nothing is going to happen the first two times, so I would just skip to the third.

Every story is the same. Someone goes out into the world to seek fortune, marry someone, or defeat evil. He/she collects some magic artifacts. Something happens based on wordplay or puns. Then he's told not to do something, and inevitably, he does it. Because where would the plot be if anyone actually followed directions? Otherwise we wouldn't have "Gremlins". Go see the Disney versions.

I honestly don't know why Disney didn't try to follow these stories more accurately in their movies. As a child I love the darker versions of these tale even more, I get it though. But, this is definitely a must have in a child's library.

I wanted to brush up on classic stories to better appreciate references in other works but this rendition was pretty bland and often without any moral at all.

Fabulous in pieces. I spent 5 months reading these stories a bit a a time, some to my kids, some just to myself. I think trying to read this start to finish would be tedious. I truly enjoyed most of the stories, weird, violent, cruel, moralistic and sappy. I half knew these were the basis for many Disney stories but didn't quite realize how many, sometimes the originals were better, sometimes, honestly the Disney adaptations were better. I read a few in the original German but since I don't speak German all that well that was a challenge. I would recommend everyone (ok maybe not everyone) get a copy of this book to pick up and read for short periods.

I have been working my way through the tales since January and all I can say is that they were basically the same story with minor variations. It became really hard to distinguish one from the other as they seemed to involve good/evil, royalty, step children and step parents, and death.

 Read January 2024
Took me almost 11 years of on and off reading, but I'm finally done. Some were good, others not so much.

I read the complete edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales as research for a novel I’m working on, and unless you’re doing research yourself, I’d suggest reading a shorter version.
Most of the stories in the complete edition are extremely similar with just a few variations. The smaller editions tend to eliminate those repeats saving the reader time. If you’re doing research or just interested in seeing the variations, the complete edition is perfect. I loved it so much and enjoyed seeing the distinctions.
