Definately a very interesting read. Demons do not play a central role in the book. It was more like a Bell Jarespe kind of novel. A book where even the reader is unsure of the difference between reality and insanity while reading the book, and never realizes where that turn happened.

Normally, when I pick up a Graham Joyce book, I am sucked in and every word makes me laugh, think or bit my lip in anticipation. This novel however, did not quite capture my whole attention, and while written with Joyce's usual skill it fell flat with me. [return][return]I found myself wanting to know more about the side characters, and annoyed by the main character. His mid-life crisis seemed lame, and his fears silly. The other characters seemed more alive, more real, and their troubles seemed true. [return][return]I am glad I read it, and will read anything that he puts out, a nominal book by Joyce is an excellent book compared to what is out there.

An amazing book. I recommend highly. Compares well with Neil Gaiman, but with a very distinctive voice. I can't believe I've never read anything by Graham Joyce before.

I expected a fantasy with this book but what I got was infinitely better. Thoughtful, simple, meandering and completely relatable. Loved the take on demons, had me befuddled so bad! Much prefer the US title.

Languidly paced, slow-boiled, charming, and lovely. It was never exciting, but I also never wanted to put it down. Not actually about demons at all.
