Yesika Salgado is probably my favorite poet. Her writing is so moving and feels so modern and timeless. Her poetry feels like pouring out your heart to a bestie during a sleepover.

As excited as I was to read poetry from a fat, El Salvadorian woman, this collection fell a bit flat for me.
Some of the poems were hauntingly beautiful, especially at the beginning and end, but I found myself struggling with the majority.
Many of the same, weak metaphors were used throughout, e.g. fruit as a heart, and stylistic line breaks were used in such excess that it cheapened the effect where the intention was most important to land. Where these two drivers of meaning failed, there was virtually no word play or structure to pick up the slack in driving the author's experience and narrative, which sucks because there's so much experience here.
The ordering of poems may have also been a contributor of my struggles, with many poems landing one after the other where the author was self-deprecating to the point where it was hard to root for her through the end.
But it could be that I don't get it or that there are deeper things at play that I'm too novice to notice. And when a poem landed, it LANDED. Like I loved the piece about lending a hair pin on the bus; such a rad, slice of life example of folks supporting eachother.
Ultimately, if you like Rupi Kaur or some of the more modern poets who are more short and literal, then you may enjoy this as well, and there's lots to relate with here. I'll definitely be on the lookout for her next work because I suspect there is oodles of untapped potential here.

O livro é bom mas nem todos os poemas/textos me conquistaram. Mas os que gostei, gostei muito.
I have never been more emotionally invested in a book that was short like this. Truly a favorite of mine and something that generally connects those wanting to understand love a little better.
