I read this because I’d seen some rave reviews. I was really disappointed however.
The book started well and I enjoyed the initial pace and the characterisation. It soon went downhill for me though. I predicted the ending long before it came and hated how it descended into unrealistic melodrama, with the characters becoming unbelievable.
Not for me and I won’t be reading any others in the series. A shame as it started really well. Just my opinion of course.

Listened as an audiobook. Another crime thriller from Joy Ellis. I am enjoying getting to know the characters better with each book and have a good picture of them in my mind. Again, it was excellently read by Richard Armitage who has an amazing talent of switching between characters and accents.

A page turner with a good plot but felt it lacked the ingredients of truly good crime writing
Everything over explained - eg we don't need to be told that Kevin has come up with an embryo of a plan. Show don't tell
Flawed characters, flawed by writing not their essence eg would a forensic psychologist really call someone "a sandwich short of a picnic"
Daft core thread - anti-depressants hardly an undercover drug...why would multiple women in a small town seek them as if they were Class A drugs. So readily available via GP.
Fairly clear "whodunnit" from early stages because too many clues given
Think Joy Ellis needs to credit readership with the intelligence to join the dots themselves

A woman has been brutally stabbed to death in her own kitchen. A young man walks into a police station claiming he killed her. DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans investigate a disturbing case with links to a notorious case which happened in the Fens area several years before. I’ve read later books from this series and hasn’t realised I hadn’t read the first installment. Great to get some background on the characters.
