This is a great story. You get to the end of the story and half the book is left. You peel of layer after layer and keep going and wondering what will happen. A way cool story. This is an adult story.

Ook dit afzonderlijk te lezen vervolgdeel was bijzonder mooi en aangrijpend. Het boek volgt hetzelfde stramien: een verhaal in een verhaal, maar zó indrukwekkend om in de binnenvertelling te lezen hoe een jonge vrouw na haar huwelijk twee zoons krijgt, de eerste in liefde ontvangen en de tweede eigenlijk ongewenst, hoe dit haar relatie met beide jongens beïnvloedt en hoe zij op een bepaald moment moet kiezen tussen beiden, hoe dit alles ook later zijn weerslag blijkt te hebben gehad op het karakter en de gemoedsgesteldheid van de tweede zoon en hoe diens hart tenslotte wordt verlicht ('gestemd' als een instrument) door de overstelpende liefde, onbaatzuchtigheid en opofferingsgezindheid die hij ervaart door iemand die noodgedwongen een tijdlang in zijn nabijheid verkeert, waardoor zijn agressie, haatgevoelens en doodswens verdwijnen en onmetelijke liefde en vergeving zijn hart vervullen.
In de raamvertelling blijkt dat het aangehoorde verhaal en de ontmoetingen in Birma de hoofdpersoon Julia niet onberoerd laten en aanleiding vormen tot een levensbepalende beslissing.

Loved this and the first one! The characters are so memorable and writing style so unique, I could keep reading this forever to keep these characters going!!

A beautifully written book. Wasn't sure about it at first, but it turned out to be wonderful :)
Julia, a lawyer with a semi-drifting life in New York city, and semi-estrangement from her mother and brother who live in San Francisco, starts hearing voices in her head and a Buddhist monk tells her it is a second soul that has entered her and she needs to liberate it. Then Julia goes to Burma, where her father came from and where her half brother U Ba introduces her to the troubled life of Nu Nu.
You get the drift...
The book has good description of life in Burma, sounds like the author knows it well. It is a sequel to the author's previous book, which I have not read. But I had no trouble following the book even without reading the precursor. This book is not a page turner and yet the book is not bad enough that you cannot finish it. If you can read about voices in the head, souls, reincarnation and stuff like that, you may like it.
