[b:Little Women|93019|Little Women|Louisa May Alcott|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328753097s/93019.jpg|3244642] tells the story of the moral upbringing of the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. The novel was very moving - I especially related to the parts about the third sister, Beth. My favorite line about Beth was early on: There are many Beths in the world, shy and quiet, sitting in corners till needed, and living for others so cheerfully that no one sees the sacrifices till the little cricket on the hearth stops chirping, and the sweet, sunshiny presence vanishes, leaving silence and shadow behind. Being the third of four boys, I saw a lot of parallels in my own life to her as a character.
I loved [a:Louisa May Alcott|1315|Louisa May Alcott|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1200326665p2/1315.jpg]’s positive message in the story, and the characters were all great. I definitely see why this is a classic. It will very likely be my favorite read this year, it was that good.

Part 1: 5 stars
Part 2: 3 stars
This is too damn long. The first part was so wonderful, but the 2nd half really dragged on. If you’re not interested in reading classics, I would suggest watching the movie instead because it’s a very accurate adaptation.

My first time reading and I see why it is the classic it is. Its breadth is vast, characters compelling, heart true, and morality unwavering.
It is extremely dialogue-heavy, and Alcott does a magnificent job in staying so completely true to the characters that the reader is able to tell who is speaking without the dialogue tag. Then again I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was fantastic, so I suppose that helped.
Beth’s death was fucking tragic but exquisitely written. The prose of that chapter: magnanimous.
Disappointing how Alcott was forced to marry off Jo, but I wasn’t completely thrown by it because she did a great job of going back and building the ‘romance’ throughout - also, perhaps the opening of the school wouldn’t have been possible without said marriage, so all in all, not a big loss.
Love love love this book. Also love love love Greta Gerwig’s brilliant movie adaptation, which compelled me to finally read this. Cheers all around!
