So full of misogyny, antisemitism, ableism and narcissism. There is some beautiful writing and some sensual writing hidden in there somewhere

This is the most racist, sexist, misogynistic, anti-sematic thing Ive ever read. Goes to show the classics aren't always great. The best part of this book is the guy talking about dry farts or saying hes an american that why he's "retarded"

I can’t remember why this made it onto my TBR, other than curiosity about why it led to obscenity trials in the US. Of course in today’s world, the sexual content does not seem that wild, and I have a hunch the content concerning Russia was the real reason for its banning. Or at least that just fanned the flames in a Cold War America. The book is a largely autobiographical novel, and I hesitate to even call it a novel. It feels more like a journal, where Miller recorded anything and everything, without filter. My English major brain can appreciate the post-modernist existentialism, but my feminist brain is pretty disgusted by the blatant, constant misogyny. I can’t say it is a book I recommend.
