Oh how I love David Sedaris! Specifically waited until I was living in indo so I could get the full foreigner experience of the Normandy essays.

It made me laugh out loud more than once, so that's great. I listened to the audio book read by David Sedaris, so hearing everything in the author's actual voice enhanced things, I think.

It was a little journey for me though. It started off fine with the first few stories, but then there's the chapter about his drug use and art endeavors. And it sounded so implausible that I mentally switched the genre from memoirs to zany little stories based on his experiences in the loosest sense only. The next chapter about teaching a college class reinforced this thought. Those two chapters were not enjoyable or interesting or funny once I thought it was all just complete fiction.

I researched the author and found out he really was addicted to meth for years, so I allowed a willing suspension of disbelief to return and enjoyed the rest of the book immensely. Things really are much funnier if you can imagine them actually happening.

I used to love this collection when I was a kid, listening to the audiobook on longer car rides with my aunt and uncle. Now, though, much of the comedy I once enjoyed falls flat. I may have let out a puff of air at a few of the more clever lines, but that was it. Now that i’m older, the mere existence of communists or short people is not enough to make me laugh and it’s much more difficult to find humor in cheap jokes about not being straight or white. I don’t mean that Me Talk Pretty One Day is egregiously offensive, but that the content has aged quite poorly and I’ve raised my standards. While I might be interested in reading Sedaris’s newer work because I still appreciate his dry, sardonic voice, this is not a book I’d be likely to recommend.

Another David Sedaris Classic. Probably my favorite book of his that I have read this far.
This book follows his Paris adventures and other life experiences. His honesty and realistic perspective on things is refreshing. I laughed out loud so many times! This book is great for when you are feeling down and need something or someone to laugh at.

I do not understand why people believe Sedaris is funny.

I tried getting through it a few times and maybe will try again at which point I'll change my review.
I think I'm just a sensitive person because with the light style he should be an easy read. For me, Sedaris is not an easy read. Throughout the first few chapters, I struggled with the flat, coarse language,
I got turned off on the part of him snorting crap off the floor
, and I completely lost all the interest, when
the poor unattended uncared for dog meets her end
.
Props to Sedaris (provided these are all true) for pulling his life together cause it seems like a broken beginning but as for the book itself, it left a bitter taste in my mouth and soul. For me, it was more sad than funny.
