I find the second half of this book to be really fun and engaging, but the first half of the book drags for me.

Flawless, simply. This book takes everything fucked up about the Harry Potter and either fixes it or shines a light on it. And makes it sexy, of course. (August 2020)

The ending is just so brilliant... I've never read anything as beautiful in fantasy before. Everything clicks, and it's all novel... Gorgeous plotting. (November 2020)

I don't have the brain cells to write a review yet but I will say this: I love u Lucy u deserved better

---

after rereading, I've moved this down from 4 stars to 3.75. some aspects of this book are very enjoyable (the banter, for instance, always got a laugh out of me, and
Lucy's relationship with Simon and the world around her always made me cry
) but on the whole... I think there are pacing issues (
especially the part where book four began and we immediately jumped into a horror show without a real bridge between the two sections
). I think Rowell was sometimes trying to say something and she didn't get her point across well if at all. I did enjoy that the characters were flawed, but I wasn't as keen on how that was poked fun for us readers without really being acknowledged in the story, much less dealt with. I enjoyed this more on my first read and while I still had a fun time this round, I saw more flaws popping up as I went. it dampened my enjoyment a lot ://

I liked this book a decent amount. I can say that there were times where I was heavily invested in what was happening and other times where I felt bored and underwhelmed. Personally, I think it had to do with the constant switching of POVs that made me feel that way. But the one thing that I absolutely loved about this book was Simon and Baz’s dynamic and their relationship. It was really nice to see their progress!

I do love this series, but I've only recently become fully aware of the extent of Rainbow Rowell's issues--namely, her racism in her earlier book Eleanor & Park, and her subsequent lack of apology or any form of acknowledgement of the harm she's caused. Eleanor & Park continues to be her most well-known and successful work, and it's being adapted into a movie, and Rowell still hasn't done *anything* to make up for its racism. Which is inexcusable, and leads me to think I shouldn't support her or her work moving forward.

I don't believe the art and the artist can be separated much in this case--not when she has refused to listen to those she's harmed, or acknowledged said harm at all. I don't think Rowell or her work should be supported, at least for now. I won't be buying any of her future books unless she fully reckons with the harm her racism has caused.
