There were always aspects of growing up as the child of refugees that were universally understood in-group but never really spoken about. Perhaps more recently in superficial jest you might come across a joke or two (always a joke), but never with such clarity and body. This is a deeply generous and thoughtful reflection on Pung's relationship with her father. Pung writes with such finesse, such tenderness and insight as she considers such difficult subject matter as the Khmer Rouge. I am deeply moved by how she is able to convey so much complex emotion with delicate care, simplicity, and truth.
