"Freud's theories are important for two reasons: from a historical perspective, and to understand Woody Allen films" -paraphrased from an old undergraduate psychology textbook
I feel like I'm fudging it a little bit with the #nonfiction label for Sigmund Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams," and I have multiple degrees in psychology. Despite those multiple degrees (a M.A. in educational psychology and a B.S. for the curious) Freud was only ever mentioned in a very cursory way in introductory classes. Going in, I was very interested to actually read his work. Warning: Freud did not try to be objective in his essays. Obviously, this creates biases, and Freud's theories do not hold the same scientific rigor that theories advanced today must. The Freudian perspective, especially dream interpretation, has limited value in non-Western cultures, and dream interpretation itself may not be the most insightful way to understand the subconscious. Despite those drawbacks, "The Interpretation of Dreams" is a fascinating book, just for its impressive historical impact.

im not in a position to evaluate the theory here but the dream narratives were tremendously fun and the bits on memory merit a reread

It's comments on the likely causes of dreams have stuck with me for 20 years

hey buddy not everything is about sex

Took me a long time to read this... I did enjoy it at moments, however, I was often bored.
